Major security bug fixed in Firefox

Image
Mozilla is advising fans of Firefox to update the stable version of the browser after it released a patch for a security bug marked "critical" today. Available for Windows, Mac, and Linux, Firefox 3.6.12 patches a heap buffer overflow that could allow for remote code execution. Mozilla notes that the bug affects the current version 3.6 branch of Firefox, the legacy version 3.5 branch, and could potentially affect Thunderbird users who load Web pages in the RSS reader. The bug has not been found in the upcoming version 4, currently in beta development and behind schedule. Firefox 4 beta 7 was originally due in the middle of September, then pushed back to the end of September because of a stability bug. Mozilla has since initiated a code freeze on the next generation of its browser but has yet to update the schedule because of multiple critical bugs. It's expected that Mozilla's updated JavaScript engine will land in the seventh beta. Called JaegerMonkey, it's curre...

Apple also fixed two additional remote code exection issues, including one that was publicly released by Dai Zovi in June (see slides - PDF). Continue reading

Firefox dirty dozen: Mozilla patches 'critical' browser flaws

Image
Mozilla has released Firefox 3.6.11 with patches for a dozen security holes, some serious enough to launch attacks if a user simply surfs to a booby-trapped website. In all, the open-source released nine bulletins documenting 12 security vulnerabilities. Five of the bulletins are rated “critical,” meaning that those vulnerabilities can be exploited to run attacker code and install software, requiring no user interaction beyond normal browsing. Here’s the raw information on the critical updates: MFSA 2010-71 Unsafe library loading vulnerabilities: Mozilla developer Ehsan Akhgari reported that a function used to load external libraries on Windows platforms was using a relative path to a DLL-loading application and was thus vulnerable to binary planting if an attacker was able to place an executable of the same name in the current working directory or any of the other locations that Windows searches for executables. Java mega-update plugs 29 critical security holes

Image
Oracle has issued a massive Java SE and Java for Business update to fix 29 security vulnerabilities that could be exploited to take complete control of vulnerable computers. According to Oracle, 28 of these vulnerabilities could be remotely exploitable without authentication (over a network without the need for a username and password). The patches are available for Windows, Linux and Solaris users. Apple’s Mac OS X is also vulnerable but security updates for that operating system is usually delayed for several months. According to Oracle’s advisory, 15 of the 29 vulnerabilities carry the maximum 10.0 CVSS severity rating. Continue reading

Sony Ericsson installs security software on mobile phones

Image
Seeking to address the problem of cellular phone theft in the Philippines, mobile handset manufacturer Sony Ericsson announced that it will be installing security software on some of its smartphone handsets, starting with the recently launched Xperia X8 model, which runs on Google’s Android operating system. While previous models can be installed with third party security applications, Sony Ericsson tapped McAfee for the Xperia X8’s security software, which is called WaveSecure . In an interview, Sony Ericsson General Manager Dennis Manzano said the inclusion of a security application was a “natural progression” as the company sees growth in the smartphone handset, which has become a target for both phone thieves as well as cybercriminals looking to steal valuable data from the phones when it is connected to the Internet. Manzano said mobile phone security is nothing new, though people have a tendency to actually forget that their phones are very unsecured against phone thieves. But m...

Critical flaws haunt Microsoft Office, IE browser

Image
Microsoft dropped its largest ever batch of security patches today to cover a record 49 security vulnerabilities, including several browser flaws that could expose Internet Explorer users to drive-by malware downloads. The Internet Explorer bulletin (MS10-071) fixes a total of 12 vulnerabilities and because of the risk of zero-click drive-by download attacks, Microsoft is urging Windows users to apply this patch immediately. Windows users should also pay special attention to MS10-076, which covers a serious flaw in the way the operating system handles embedded OpenType (EOT) fonts. This update is rated “critical” for all versions of Windows (including Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008) and can be exploited to launch remote code execution attacks if a computer user simply surfs to a booby trapped Web site. Microsoft also urged system administrators to treat these bulletins with the highest priority: * MS10-077: Addresses a vulnerability in .NET Framework that could allow remote code ex...

Image
Microsoft will unveil handsets running its new Windows Phone 7 (WP7) operating system for the first time today at an event in New York. Some experts predict this will be a make-or-break product launch. Analysts say Microsoft's success with WP7 is important to its mobile initiatives, as well as to the overall future prowess of the software giant, which is best known for its desktop operating systems and office productivity software. Analysts regard the WP7 announcement as important to the entire company. "On a scale of 1 to 10, this announcement is an 11," said Ramon Llamas, an IDC analyst. "This is where the rubber meets the road. It's huge." Microsoft must prove it has overcome its dismal performance with the current Windows Mobile OS and the failure of a youth-focused Kin phone line that launched in the spring but was killed two months later. Trojan Forces Firefox to Save Your Passwords

Image
A Firefox Trojan has been found to force the Internet browser to save user passwords and then use those passwords to create a new user account on the infected computer. Most security researchers recommend that users tell Firefox not to remember their passwords, since saved ones are so easily extracted by malware. The Trojan-PWS-Nslog malware discovered by security company Webroot, however, gets around user preferences altogether by actually deactivating the Firefox code that asks if it should save those passwords when the user logs into a secure site. "Before the infection, a default installation of Firefox 3.6.10 would prompt the user after the user clicks the Log In button on a Web page, asking whether he or she wants to save the password," Webroot researcher Andrew Brandt explained in a blog post on Wednesday. "After the infection, the browser simply saves all login credentials locally, and doesn't prompt the user." Continue reading

Windows 7 SP1 RC-Escrow Build 7601.17104 Available to Select Testers, Reportedly

Image
Microsoft has reportedly produced the Escrow Build of the first Release Candidate for Windows 7 Service Pack 1 and provided the bits for testing to a select pool of testers. Following the release of Windows 7 SP1 Beta in July 2010, the software giant has been less chatty about the first upgrade for the latest iteration of the Windows client. No plans for the development process were made public for example, but despite this, Microsoft has been hard at work on the service pack which some still believe will be finalized and offered to users by the end of 2010. The Redmond company has yet to confirm the availability of Windows 7 SP1 RC Escrow officially, and with the information coming from a third-party source, users need to take it with a grain of salt. Steven Sinofsky, President, Windows and Windows Live Division was present at the Beauty of the Web event in San Francisco in mid-September, but he wasn’t talking Windows, whether it was Windows 7 SP1 or Windows 8. According to the report...
