iPhone 5 edges toward supply-demand balance

Image
iPhone 5 supplies continued to improve this week as Apple reduced the wait time for delivery to "2 weeks" on its online store. The status change comes a bit more than a week after Apple shortened the shipping delay to "2-3 weeks" from the "3-4 weeks" that had plagued the smartphone for almost two months. Apple started taking pre-orders for the iPhone 5 on Sept. 14, but ran through its initial inventory within an hour. By Monday Sept. 24, three days after the smartphone went on sale at Apple's retail stores and those of its mobile carrier partners, the device was backordered three to four weeks. It stayed stuck on that span until Nov. 12. In late October, Apple CEO Tim Cook told Wall Street analysts that sales of the iPhone 5 had been "extremely robust" and that production output had "improved significantly" since the beginning of that month...continue -  ComputerWorld .

Mac OS X security flaw publicized after Apple fails to patch

Image
Penetration testing specialists Core Security has publicly released information on a serious security vulnerability in Apple’s Mac OS X and criticized the computer maker for delaying the release of a patch. The vulnerability, which only affects Apple Mac OS X v10.5, could allow hackers to take complete control of a vulnerable machine via malicious PDF files. In an advisory, Core Security said Apple claims it already has a patch prepared for this issue but failed to release the fix despite several promises. Apple did not give any reasons for skipping the patch release. Full Story

Apple patches Summerc0n Java for Mac security hole

Image
Apple has rushed out a Java for Mac update to fix multiple security vulnerabilities, including a critical flaw discussed three months ago at Summerc0n by researcher Dino Dai Zovi. The Java for Mac update rolls up fixes for extremely critical security holes in Java 1.6.0_20. The most serious flaws allows an untrusted Java applet to execute arbitrary code outside the Java sandbox. These could be exploited to launch drive-by download attacks. Apple also fixed two additional remote code exection issues, including one that was publicly released by Dai Zovi in June (see slides - PDF). Continue reading

Motorola sues Apple for patent infringement

Image
Motorola has launched legal action against Apple for patent infringement in its Mac, iPod and iPhone lines. The company has launched three complaints claiming that Apple has broken 18 patents Motorola says it holds. The patents are also infringed by Apple’s App Store and MobileMe services, according to Motorola. “Motorola has innovated and patented throughout every cycle of the telecommunications industry evolution, from Motorola’s invention of the cell phone to its development of premier smartphone products. We have extensively licensed our industry-leading intellectual property portfolio, consisting of tens of thousands of patents in the US and worldwide,” said Kirk Dailey, corporate vice president of intellectual property at Motorola Mobility. Samsung Galaxy Tab Rises as First Rival for Apple iPad

Image
Apple is now facing a competitor in the tablet market after Samsung released its own tablet computer Thursday, September 2 in Berlin, Germany at the IFA electronics fair. The Galaxy Tab will try to compete with the popular iPad. The new gadget measures at 7.4 x 4.7 x 0.47 inches while the multi-touch touch screen is at 7 inches, making it smaller than the Apple counterpart. It weighs at 380 grams and comes at two variations, the 16GB and the 32GB. It will run using Android 2.2 operating system. It has a 512 memory and some things that the iPad lack: a micro-SD slot, multitasking OS and a camera (3 MP). Continue reading

Hands-on review: Netflix on the iPhone app

Image
This morning, Netflix finally debuted its app for the iPhone and iPod touch in iTunes. Now, here’s the review. At Apple’s big press event in early June, the big deal was obviously the iPhone 4. While not as equally exciting, the official announcement of a Netflix app finally coming for the iPhone was definitely welcome news, especially after rumors were swirling since a few months prior. First off, know that your device has to be running iOS version 3.13 or later. Using my iPhone 4, I tested the app out this morning. Like the SlingPlayer for iPhone app, media can be streamed over both Wi-Fi and 3G networks. Immediately, you’ll get a bunch of new releases pop up on your Home screen to look through, which you can literally watch instantly right there. Continue reading

Apple 'traitorware' can take your photo and shut down your jailbroken iPhone, iPad

Image
A US court says it's okay to jailbreak your iPhone or iPad. Apple doesn't seem to agree / AP Source: AP APPLE has been accused of creating "traitorware" for trying to patent security software that tracks down people who jailbreak their iPhones and iPads and locks them out of their devices. Jailbreaking allows users to access software and features for their devices that have not been sanctioned by Apple. The process was declared legitimate by a US court earlier this month, but Apple said any such interference in their device will void its warranty. Apple's patent, which went before the US Patent and Trademark Office earlier this week, is for "systems and methods for identifying unauthorised users of an electronic device". Using the software, Apple can remotely access your sensitive information and data, continue reading

Apple patches 13 Mac OS X vulnerabilities

Image
Apple has shipped a new Mac OS X security update to fix 13 documented vulnerabilities, some serious enough to expose users to remote code execution attacks. The patch includes fixes for security holes in several open-source components, including ClamAV and PHP. Here’s a quick look at the vulnerabilities and affected components. * CVE-2010-1808: A stack buffer overlow exists in Apple Type Services’ handling of embedded fonts. Viewing or downloading a document containing a maliciously crafted embedded font may lead to arbitrary code execution. * CVE-2010-1800: CFNetwork permits anonymous TLS/SSL connections. This may allow a man-in-the-middle attacker to redirect connections and intercept user credentials or other sensitive information. This issue does not affect the Mail application. This issue is addressed by disabling anonymous TLS/SSL connections. This issue does not affect systems prior to Mac OS X v10.6.3. Continue reading

iPad Paves the Way for Coming Tablet Invasion

Image
The Apple iPad has been embraced by businesses much faster than its iPhone predecessor. That acceptance is primarily a result of the success of the iPhone, but it also opens the door for iPad competitors to enter the business world more easily once they're available. A report from the Wall Street Journal states "The company's tablet-style device seems to be sidestepping the resistance that the iPhone and other consumer-oriented devices have faced in the corporate environment. Indeed, many businesses have raced to snap up iPads." The iPad has a jumpstart on other tablets in two ways. First, it has the advantage of riding the coattails of business adoption of the iPhone. Second, it has the benefit of being first to market among the next-generation tablets. Because the iPad is built on the same iOS foundation as the iPhone, companies that have accepted the iPhone and continue reading

Third Time's a Charm: iOS 4.1 Will Finally Fix iPhone 4

Image
Following a couple random rumors that iOS 4.1 is impending, a stereotypically terse response apparently sent from Steve Jobs iPhone confirms that the highly anticipated update is, in fact, "coming soon." This will be the third update to iOS 4 since its initial release in June, and if speculation about iOS 4.1 is accurate, this update will finally be the software that should have been on the iPhone 4 when it launched. I am sure you're familiar by now with the notorious antenna issue that has plagued some segment of the iPhone 4 population. The infamous "antennagate" caused a great uproar--although Steve Jobs and Apple have maintained that the attenuation of the signal power is perfectly normal, that only a small percentage of iPhone 4 users are experiencing the problem, and that if iPhone 4 users would just hold the smartphone differently the issue would be resolved. LG, iPad, and the Tablet Creation Myth

Image
You needn't look far to find criticism of Apple's iPad as a device for consumption, not creation. The latest volley comes from Chang Ma, vice president of marketing for LG's mobile device unit, who hyped LG's upcoming Android tablet as a productivity tool. Paraphrasing Ma, the Wall Street Journal says he likes the iPad, but doesn't do much work on it, and that's where the LG tablet will stand apart. I call bull. While Ma is right that the iPad flounders with creativity in some areas -- but not others -- the iPad's limitations are often inherent to its form. But don't take my word for it. Let's look at some other "iPad consumption vs. creation" arguments and consider whether another tablet could do better. Full article; PCWorld

Quattro is Dead, Long Live iAd

Image
Apple kicked off 2010 with the purchase of the Quattro mobile advertising platform. Fast forward eight months, and Apple is now pulling the plug on the Quattro network in favor of its own iAd mobile advertising platform. Apple sent a letter to current Quattro clients this week announcing that the mobile advertising network will be shut down effective September 30. From that point forward, Apple will focus its mobile advertising efforts exclusively on the iAd platform. Continue reading via; PCWorld

PS3 now jailbreakable via USB dongle?

Image
Pirating made easy? (Credit: PSJailbreak.com) A new hack is purportedly hitting the scene in a week or so that could let PS3 owners dump borrowed games onto the system's hard drive--or even an external drive--and play them. No optical discs, just straight gaming from an HD. Needless to say, this is a hack many users have been waiting for and one Sony has been trying to prevent. The hack, which some are calling a jailbreak, similar to software that allows non-Apple-approved apps to run on the iPhone and iPad, comes in the form of a USB dongle called PS Jailbreak. When inserted into a PS3's USB port and booted, the console runs the software on the stick. The software installs the jailbreak that turns off many of Sony's security measures, but it keeps your valid warranty seal intact and won't brick your console, the makers say. BlackBerry Torch could be a flop for RIM

Image
BlackBerry Torch sales have been far from lively since the Torch's Aug. 12 launch. This week, several online retailers slashed the price of the BlackBerry Torch in half. When RIM introduced the BlackBerry Torch last week, several bloggers wondered if RIM had finally produced a smartphone capable of taking on the formidable Apple iPhone 4. And why not? The Torch seemed to be a solidly-built smartphone, kitted out with both a touch screen and a physical keyboard, along with the brand new BlackBerry 6 operating system. As Lance Ulanoff of PC World wrote, "unlike the ill-conceived BlackBerry Storm, there is no ridiculous gimmick in the BlackBerry Torch. Instead, it's the product of a lot of smart, clear-headed thinking about what existing BlackBerry users – like me – want." But over the past few days, interest in the Torch has apparently been tepid, with RIM selling only an estimated 150,000 units. Continue reading; CSMonitor

Experts argue over merits of 7-inch Apple iPad rumours

Image
Analysts split on Tuesday over reports that Apple may be readying a smaller iPad for launch later this year. According to a story published Tuesday in Taiwan's Chinese-language Economic Daily News financial newspaper, Apple is prepping a 7-inch iPad for a holiday launch later in 2010. The newspaper cited sources that said several Taiwanese component makers have won contracts for a smaller iPad. IDG News Service reported on the Economic Daily News account earlier yesterday. Last week, DigiTimes, an English-language IT publication also based in Taiwan, claimed that component manufacturers were preparing for a smaller iPad to be launched in early 2011. The new model would have a screen in the 5-inch to 7-inch range, said DigiTimes, and would be priced under $400. Continue reading; Macworld

IPhone 4 surprises with rich bounty

Image
A pple packs several new features into its iPhone 4 and improves on several others, with the possible exception of the handset’s actual telephone - which worked fine for me. Of all the new features, FaceTime - video chat over Wi-Fi wireless Internet using the phone’s forward-facing camera - is easily the most fun. I talked to my 4-year-old nephew Ben and my 2-year-old niece Abby (with help from their father) and we all got a huge kick out of it. Ben, in particular, may have created his own app - ButtTime - just by turning around. He clearly hasn’t seen the commercials, and didn’t realize we were supposed to have a super-annoying heart-to-heart about babies, braces or bad haircuts. FaceTime konked out once, but that may have been due to a spotty Wi-Fi connection on one end. Aside from that, it worked smoothly. The feature is fun to use, but I’m not sure how I’d feel about video calls becoming the standard phone experience down the line. Continue reading; BostonHerald

Apple to Launch 7-inch IPad by Christmas

Image
Apple is readying another tablet similar to the iPad but with a 7-inch touchscreen for launch as early as the end of this year, according to a major Taiwanese newspaper. This is the second report of an iPad 2 sighting in Taiwan, and it comes from the island's Chinese-language Economic Daily News financial newspaper, which was among the first to correctly report that Apple was making a tablet when other news sources said it would be a netbook. The launch of the original iPad proved the paper correct. Taiwan's Digitimes newspaper last week reported that Taiwanese companies were starting to assemble a 7-inch iPad for Apple. The Economic Daily reports that Taiwanese companies have won a number of component contracts for the iPad 2. Chimei Innolux will supply 7-inch LCD screens, which use the same IPS (in-plane switching) technology found in the original iPad, which improves viewing angles and color on LCD screens. Touchscreen technology for the screens will come from Cando Corporat...
