A jailbreak from someone who said he was retiring last July was released today. The twist is that the comeback release was supposed to be issued Monday, October 11, now it is ahead of another jailbreak release from another competitor. George Holtz, more known as “Geohot”, released Limera1n ahead of Greenpois0n by Chronic Dev Team. The latter is scheduled for release morning of Sunday, October 10. A US court says it's okay to jailbreak your iPhone or iPad. Apple doesn't seem to agree / AP Source: AP APPLE has been accused of creating "traitorware" for trying to patent security software that tracks down people who jailbreak their iPhones and iPads and locks them out of their devices. Jailbreaking allows users to access software and features for their devices that have not been sanctioned by Apple. The process was declared legitimate by a US court earlier this month, but Apple said any such interference in their device will void its warranty. Apple's patent, which went before the US Patent and Trademark Office earlier this week, is for "systems and methods for identifying unauthorised users of an electronic device". If Sony's piracy safeguards have indeed fallen, perhaps Sony should bring back Other OS. Although I never found much utility in Other OS, a Playstation 3 feature that could turn the console into a basic computer running Linux, my heart went out to people who used Other OS before Sony scrapped it. Sony said it removed Other OS in March to "protect the integrity of the console," possibly because one hacker came too close to exploiting the feature in a way that would allow piracy. But now, OzModChips claims to have the first PS3 modchip on a USB stick. In theory, this allows people to play bootleg and homebrew games and make disc backups. Supposedly, it can also bypass firmware updates that Sony might use to banish the hack. If Sony's piracy safeguards have indeed fallen, I propose that Sony should bring back Other OS. After all, once the integrity of the console is lost, there's no point in protecting it at the expense of users who did no harm. Full Article; PCWorld

In the four years since Sony's PlayStation 3 has been with us, it's never been hacked to play pirated games--until now, that is, if claims by hacker group PSJailbreak prove true. The group, reportedly operating from China or Hong Kong, claims it's on the verge of releasing a USB dongle (they're implying it's a 'jailbreak' tool) that lets you play pirated as well as homemade games on a retail PS3 by converting it into a "debug" unit, a special version of the PS3 used by developers and others to access non-retail versions of games. The dongle comes loaded with software that the hackers claim will let players save games to the PS3's hard drive. All one has to do to get it working, they say, is insert the dongle into the PS3 and boot up. The hackers also claim the dongle is capable of blocking Sony's mandatory firmware updates, which might otherwise disable the hack, or "brick" (render unusable) the system. (Credit: PSJailbreak.com) A new hack is purportedly hitting the scene in a week or so that could let PS3 owners dump borrowed games onto the system's hard drive--or even an external drive--and play them. No optical discs, just straight gaming from an HD. Needless to say, this is a hack many users have been waiting for and one Sony has been trying to prevent. The hack, which some are calling a jailbreak, similar to software that allows non-Apple-approved apps to run on the iPhone and iPad, comes in the form of a USB dongle called PS Jailbreak. When inserted into a PS3's USB port and booted, the console runs the software on the stick. The software installs the jailbreak that turns off many of Sony's security measures, but it keeps your valid warranty seal intact and won't brick your console, the makers say. Full article; Cnet news
