Facebook ‘friend’ cheats woman of RM10,000

A woman’s good intention led to her borrowing RM10,000 from a money lender to help a ‘friend’ she had met on social networking site Facebook in what was believed to be a cheating case.The 52-year-old befriended the man, who claimed to be an American citizen from Florida, on the site about a month ago and was recently told by the latter that he intended to fly here to meet her.

On Monday, the woman received a phone call from a man claiming to be her Facebook buddy, who said he had been detained by Immigration Department officers at Kuala Lumpur International Airport for entering the country with excessive amount of foreign currency.

She was told that all his luggage, including the cash he was carrying, had been impounded and that he needed to borrow RM5,000 to secure the release of his belongings.

As he promised to repay her upon his release, the woman did not suspect anything and approached a money lender for the cash, which she deposited into a bank account belonging to a different man on Tuesday.
