IPhone 4 surprises with rich bounty

Apple packs several new features into its iPhone 4 and improves on several others, with the possible exception of the handset’s actual telephone - which worked fine for me.

Of all the new features, FaceTime - video chat over Wi-Fi wireless Internet using the phone’s forward-facing camera - is easily the most fun. I talked to my 4-year-old nephew Ben and my 2-year-old niece Abby (with help from their father) and we all got a huge kick out of it. Ben, in particular, may have created his own app - ButtTime - just by turning around. He clearly hasn’t seen the commercials, and didn’t realize we were supposed to have a super-annoying heart-to-heart about babies, braces or bad haircuts.

FaceTime konked out once, but that may have been due to a spotty Wi-Fi connection on one end. Aside from that, it worked smoothly. The feature is fun to use, but I’m not sure how I’d feel about video calls becoming the standard phone experience down the line.
