StarCraft II Outsold All PC Software, Not Just Games

Blizzard's new StarCraft game has been a big hit, selling 1.5 million copies in the first two days alone. When NPD released its July video game console sales data, the tracking firm had no choice but to acknowledge the PC game's big impact on the industry. The game sold 721K units at retail, but what you may not have realized is that the title also topped all software in general.

The all categories software PC chart sent to IndustryGamers by NPD reveals that StarCraft II dominated the PC industry for the month, ahead of eight-dollar software like Kaspersky Antivirus 2010, Webroot Antivirus with Spy Sweeper and big name, more expensive software like MS Office. The $100 collector's edition of StarCraft II also placed sixth on the all categories PC chart.

Other games to make the all categories chart included EA's The Sims 3 (12th), The Sims 3 Ambitions Expansion Pack (14th), and Nancy Drew: Trail of the Twister (18th).

We'll be curious to see if StarCraft II can hold onto its momentum in its second month.
